Number talks are designed to provide students an opportunity to count, build fluency with small numbers and develop concepts of one-to-one correspondence. Number Talks last about 10 minutes in our classroom. Dot images, rekenreks and five- ten frames are used during number talks to provide a context for reasoning to match students thinking.
Below is a short video that shows dot images and dots on a ten frame. Children are expected to look at small groups of numbers and describe how they see them (ex: they are next to each other, in a diagonal,etc.) as well quickly state the quantity.
